Abha Narain Lambah
is a practicing Conservation Architect and a recipient of the Architect of the
Year Award 2019 Architectural Digest, Architect of the Year Award CNBC Awaaz
2017, Eisenhower Fellowship, Charles Wallace Fellowship (U.K.) and Sanskriti
Award. Her firm has been included in the AD100 Architects List for over a decade
and has been featured on the International Works of Wonder (The WoW List) of 20
projects by Architectural Digest USA.
Over the past 25 years, Abha's architectural practice has had a pan India
impact, with projects that include award winning conservation of 15th Century
temples in Ladakh and Hampi, iconic palaces, forts and caravansarais in
Rajasthan, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Punjab. She has worked on
conservation of the Mughal garden of Shalimar Bagh Kashmir, urban and regional
conservation in Kancheepuram and Shekhawati, Streetscape projects in Hyderabad,
Amritsar and Mumbai and conserving colonial heritage across India. The practice
has won 11 UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for heritage conservation and is the
largest architectural conservation practice in the sub-continent. Abha has been
a consultant to ICCROM, Global Heritage Fund and World Monuments Fund and has
served on the heritage committees of both Delhi and Mumbai.
Abha Narain Lambah Associates have been consultant to both central and state
governments on planning for the ancient sites of Ajanta Caves, Bodh Gaya, Amer
fort as well as 20th century sites of Santiniketan, Corbusier’s Capitol Complex
and Mumbai’s Art Deco & Victorian ensembles – all UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
They have prepared UNESCO Nomination Dossiers for the ancient Buddhist site of
Sarnath, Monuments of Mandu and Mughal Gardens of Kashmir, in addition to
intangible listing for Durga Puja and Kohima, Nagaland.
Abha has pioneered urban conservation projects across India and has restored
many 19th Century Victorian landmarks. Some of her projects in Mumbai include
urban guidelines for Khotachiwadi and Dadabhai Naoroji Road, restoration of
Asiatic Library & Town Hall, David Sassoon Library, Convocation Hall,
Elphinstone College, Tata Palace (Deutche Bank), Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalay,
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Sir JJ School of Art, Municipal
Head Office and Crawford Market. She has advised on museum design for Indian
Museum Kolkata, CSMVS Museum and Mani Bhavan in Mumbai, Rashtrapati Bhavan
Museum and Nehru Memorial Library & Museum in Delhi, Bharatpur Museum, Swaraj
Bhavan and Anand Bhavan Allahabad, Chowmahalla Palace Hyderabad, Jaivilas Palace
Gwalior and Lal Bagh Palace Museum in Indore.
Abha has authored and edited a range of books including "Punjab: Land of the
Five Rivers", “Architecture of the Indian Sultanates”, “Custodians of India’s
Heritage: 150 years of the Archaeological Survey of India” and “Shekhawati: Land
of the Merchant Princes” for MARG Publications. She has authored a range of
books on Mumbai including the "The Victorian & Art Deco Ensemble of Mumbai",
“Kala Ghoda: Celebrating Mumbai's Art District”, "Through the Looking Glass: The
Grade I Heritage of Mumbai" and co-authored “A City’s Legacy: The Indian Navy’s
Heritage in Mumbai” and “Conservation After Legislation: Issues for Mumbai”. She
has been an advocate for saving Mumbai's heritage and prepared the successful
nomination to inscribe the Mumbai's Art Deco & Victorian ensemble as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
